Finding your dream home isn’t just a huge financial investment—it’s an investment in your family, your lifestyle, and your future! It’s not uncommon for a homebuyer to visit 10, 20, or even more homes before finding that ideal place you want to call “home.”

Some people might know right away when a home is “the one.” For others, it might not be as clear. Here are 6 signs that a home you’re touring might just be your dream home: 

1. You begin to feel possessive about the property. 

When you tour “the one,” you might experience a renewed sense of energy when it comes to making the home yours. No matter how long you’ve been house hunting, you know you’ll do whatever it takes to make that home yours. If you’re at an open house and there are other potential buyers touring, your might start to feel competitive! If you’re at a private viewing, you’ll probably start to talk numbers and logistics. Some buyers start making calls to their financial planners, generous parents, and contractors!

2. You see its flaws as endearing qualities. 

Are there train tracks 10 feet from the bedroom window? Is there some burnt orange carpet from the 1970s in the living room? If you find yourself viewing a home with characteristics that you would normally find undesirable or as deal breakers and yet still feel that you like the place… it might be “the one”! You may find yourself making a mental list of reasons why those traits don’t matter… or how easily they’ll be fixed… or how you’ll get used to it… 

Be careful on this one! While making certain sacrifices may be reasonable and totally doable, sometimes these things can also be warning signs. Buyers should be wary of becoming hypnotized by the aesthetics of an artfully staged home, which might distract you from negative property features or some serious concerns. You can work to avoid this by writing down your absolute musts and deal breakfast BEFORE you ever tour a single property. Revisit this list, as it will help you remind yourself of what's actually important to you. 

3. You can envision your own family, furniture, decor, daily activities or remodeling choices in the home. 

If you find yourself measuring the dining room to make sure your Grandma’s antique dining table will fit (or start talking about knocking down a wall so it will), then this home might be “the one”! Being able to see yourself truly living in a space is a good sign that you “click” with the property, and it just might be your next home-sweet-home. 

4. You lose interest in seeing other homes.

When you’ve found your dream home, oftentimes your interest in seeing other homes will suddenly disappear. You know in your heart you’ve found what you want, and suddenly it may seem tiring to keep house hunting. 

5. The bathroom and kitchen don’t disgust you. 

For many people, the bathrooms and kitchens of others hold definite gross-out potential. There’s  just something about what goes on in those rooms that can seem intimate, dirty, and just downright unsanitary—especially if the people who live there are especially clear! But if you happen to find yourself drooling over a home’s river rock shower floor or charming farmhouse sink, it’s a good sign that you are indeed falling head-over-heels in love with “the one.”

6. The money, time, and energy it will take to buy the home feels worth it.

Buying a home is expensive and incredibly time consuming. It takes a lot of energy, oftentimes years of budgeting and saving, and probably some serious sacrifice. But when you view a home that suddenly makes all of those trade-offs feel completely worth it… then you, my friend, may have found the dream home of a lifetime!
