If you’re ready to buy a home in the Baltimore area (or have been thinking about it for a long time but haven’t quite been able to swing it), then there are some great down payment grants and incentives out there that can help you. 

In some cases, there’s up to a whopping $40,000 in assistance, plus grant money available to help you out. Below, we’ve shared a few grants and programs you should definitely be aware of, plus some important details on each one. Have any questions? $5,000 in the entire state of Maryland through the CDA Maryland Mortgage Program

Offered by the Department of Housing and Community Development's Maryland Mortgage Program, this program offers to help first-time home buyers with their downpayment and closing costs. This particular program offers a loan of up to $5,000, which is a zero percent deferred loan (there's no interest!). Click here to learn more!

$10,000+ in Baltimore City through the CDA and CDBG Program

In order to make buying a home more affordable, Baltimore City offers some great financial home buying incentives! Especially of note is the Community Development Block Grant’s Homeownership Program, a $5,000 grant that helps first-time homebuyers. There are certain income limitations you must meet to qualify—click here to learn more about this grant as well as Baltimore City’s other grants. 

$40,000 in Howard County through their Housing Opportunities Program

Howard County offers a few different programs to assist homebuyers with settlement/downpayment costs. For example, their Home Starter Loan has a few basic parameters, and you can get up to $40,000 depending on you income. You must be able to put a minimum for $1,000 of your own funds toward the home, you must take a first-time homebuyer class, and the maximum loan limit is $429,620. Learn more here!

$10,000 in Prince George’s County’s Pathway To Purchase Program

There are a couple of fantastic homeownership programs offered by the Maryland Mortgage Program for those in Prince George County. They offer up to $10,000 in down payment and closing cost assistance, which you can use on eligible properties. They also offer down payment and closing cost assistance as a 0% interest loan. $3,000 Additional for Baltimore City Employees & and Maryland State Employees

If you are a State of Maryland employee, you’re eligible to receive down payment assistance, and the amounts vary (up to $8,500!) depending on a few different factors. If you’re a Baltimore City employee, you can get up to $3,750 in down payment assistance. Click here to learn more! 

Up to $17,000 for Johns Hopkins Employees

Johns Hopkins wants their employees to be able to live close to where they work, and to help they offer a selection of grants and incentives. Depending on where you want to live and which grants you qualify for, you can get up to $17,000 in grants! Click here for more info. 

Another great program to take advantage of is Baltimore’s “Live Near Your Work” program. This homebuying incentive is for people who work at Baltimore City, and the incentives are funding by both the city and employers.
